Kathak

Kathak is one of the eight major forms of Indian
classical dance. Its origin is attributed to the traveling bards in
ancient northern India known as Kathakar (“storyteller”).
Kathak is indigenous to northern India and developed under the influence of both Hindu and Muslim cultures.
Kathak dancers tell various stories utilizing hand movements and extensive footwork, their body movements and flexibility as well as their facial expressions.
Kathak is characterized by intricate footwork and precise
rhythmic patterns that the dancer articulates by controlling about 100 ankle bells (“Ghungroos”). Kathak is found in four
distinct forms, called “gharana”, named after the cities where the
Kathak dance tradition evolved – Jaipur, Benares and Lucknow.
